Abstract


Although very little work pertaining to the possible changes of small intestinal mucosa in digestive diseases have been reported in recent years, investigators have emphasized that villous atrophy may be noted in a number of clinical and experimental conditions that have been associated with damage to the small intestinal mucosa.
In our baseline studies of mucosal elements of jejunum obtained from patients with digestive diseases, we observed mucosal lesion which was compatible with those of sprue lesion.
It is the purpose of this paper to realize the extent of damage, through calculation of absorptive surface area by the formula of a cylinder surface area and to investigate the changes between control and digestive diseases who mostly had small intestinal mucosal damage by processes apparently distinct from primary malabsorption syndrome.
The results obtained are as follows;
I) In normal Korean subjects, the average absorptive surface area was 431.959.27tmm in a field. (10 x 10)
2) In disease group, the over-ail average surface area was 284.0154.7 nmm2(58% against 100% in control), with considerable loss of 42%.
The average surface area was reduced in order : 330.1136. 7jrmm´ (68%) in intestinal disease, 323.9 `}102.6nmm2 (67%) in gastroduodenal disease, 284.2104.4zmm2 (59%) in biiiary disease, 280.9123.6 Zmm2 (58%) in liver disease, and 204.398.77tmm2 (42%) in pancreas disease, and 27686.2 Zmm2 (57%´) postgastrectom;r group respectively.
