Abstract

A comparative study was made of electrocardiograms taken before, during and after surgery in 28 patients subjected to various types of pulmonary and pleural surgery. The preoperative electrocardiogram was abnormal in only one case but electrocardiographic changes were noted in 18 cases during surgery and/or during a one-month postoperative follow-up period. During and immediately after surgery electrocardiogrephic findings consistent with hypokalemia and myocardial damage were noted in five and three cases respectively. In the remaining 10 cases, alterations in the electrocardiogram were thought to be secondary to positional changes of the heart. In several cases, electrocardiographic patterns of right ventricular hypertrophy, either transitory or persisting, were seen postoperatively.
