Abstract


Two case of synovial chondromatosis of the knee joint have been presented.
Case I : A man, thirty-one years old, complained of increasing pain and disturbance of motion in the right knee joint of one year´s duration.
Seven years after the injury of the right knee, it became painful and swollen.
Examination of the right knee revealed it to be swollen, not hot or red. < Flexion was limited to 70 degrees and extension not limited.
X-ray examination showed many opaque bodies lying in the anterior and posterior compartments of the right knee joint.
The right knee joint was opened anteriorly through a medial longitudinal incision, and the loose bodies were eradicated and a partial synovectomy was performed.
Confirmation of diagnosis was obtained by histological examination.
Case I : A man, twenty-five years old, was first seen in Oct., 1966, complaining of sharp pain and stiffness in the right knee joint of two years´ duration which had developed spontaneously.
Examination of the right knee showed it to be swollen, and attempts at active or passive motion were limited and were painful.
X-ray examination showed many opaque bodies in the knee joint cavity.
The right knee joint was opened through a lateral and medial incision. All loose bodies were removed and a synovectomy was performed.
Microscopic examination of the synovial tissue showed many round and oval nodules of cartilage.
