Abstract

A series of 35 Mongoreal dogs of 20-25kg. was used. The dogs were divided into two groups. The first consists of 27 dogs and to prove that the bladder will regenerate from the urine pooling alone, urinary diversion and subtotal cystectomy were done. The second consists of 8 dogs and this group was used to follow up the process of bladder regeneration after the subtotal cystectomy. Under the general anesthesia the bladder was exposed transperitoneally through a subumbilical median incision and subtotal cystectomy was done saving the trigone and ureteral orifices.
In the first group, 30 dogs were sacrificed at interval of one week after initial operation for 4 weeks and then every 2 weeks up to 5 months followed by every 4 weeks up to 10 months. Regeneration of the bladder was markedly inhibited in this urinary diversion group. In the second group, 8 dogs were sacrificed at interval of 2 or 4 weeks after 6 months. In this group, bladder regeneration was a definite thick-walled pouch lined with normal epithelium, many capillaries and normal capacity.
It is felt that the mechanical stretch of the bladder is the main factor by which the bladder grows. The urine pooling in the pouch serves not only to preserve and enlarge the pouch but also to develop the elements of new bladder wall by intermittent fillingand emptying.
