Abstract

By using Siregnost FD 91 holy plethysmograph, we measured airway resistance (RAW) and thoracic gas volume (TGVe) at end of expiration on 25 healthy and 59 silicotic subjects in order to evaluate effects of age and stature, and relation with indices of ventilatory function. Data were also analyzed for comparison of the changes of airway resistance according to grades of silicosis by x-ray findings, functional impairment of respiration, and by types of ventilatory function.
1. Airway resistance(RAW), airway conductance (GAW), a reciprocal of RAW, and specific conductance (SGAw), GAw/TGVe ratio, had log -normal distribution.
2. Mean values and 95% limits of normality of RAW, GAw and SGAW in the healthy subjects were 1.50 cmH2O/l/sec (0.97´-2.31cmHz0/l/sec), 679ml/sec/cmHzO (419-1,103ml/sec/cmHzO), and 0.215/sec /cmH2O (0.119^-´0.390/sec/cmHzO), respectively. On the other hand, those figures in the silicotic subjects showed rise of RAW, and fall of GAW and SGAW, indicating 2.03cmH20/l/sec (1.03-4.01OnH2O/l/sec), 496m1/sec/cmH2O (253--970ml/sec/cmHzO), and 0.143/sec/cmH2O (0.07^?0.291/sec/imHzO), respectively.
3. Contrary to the fact that GAW and SGAW showed the positive correlation with age in the healthy subjects, these two indicices were independent of age in the silicotic subjects showing the gradual decrease in the aged.
4. GAw was positively correlated with V. C. , V. C. /V. C. pred ratio, F. E. V. ,. o, F. E. V. i. o/V. C. ratio, and M.B.C. and SGAW with F. E. V. ,. o and F. E. V. ,. o/V. C. ratio in the silicotic subjects only.
5. GAw and SGAW in the silicotic subjects were well maintained until silicosis was suspected by x-ray finding, and distinctly fallen in groups of category 1,2 and 3.
6. GAW and SGAW in the silicotic subjects were unaltered until the functional impairment remained within normal limit, and fallen to about 50% of the normal values in groups with slight, moderate and advanced impairment.
7. Although there was gradual decrease in GAw by types of ventilatory impairment by order of normal, restrictive, combined and obstructive type, SGAW was decreased only in group of obstructive impairment.
8. It was obvious that SG_(AW) was more accurate index than GAW, which indicated degree of airway obstruction.
