Abstract

Plants of Liriope & Ophiopogon tubers have long been used as an expectorant, diuretic, febrifuge, tonic, and disorders of nutrition and lactation.
In Korea, Liriope platyhylla Wang et. Tang tuber is chiefly used. Both Liriope & Ophipogon tubers are commonly on sale in markets, but the classification of those is more or less vague. Mucilage, glucose and sitosterol are considered as their cheIf constituents of them but their effective ingredients are still incertain.
First of all, therefore, I have attempted the comparison of those herbs anatomically, by studing their apperances, in order to ascertain nature of those herbs produced in korea.
In Table l and Figures (1-4), it can be seen that the anatomically differences as epidermis, stoma, margin, mesophyll, cell-conteents, number and shape of vascular bundles are related ot their appearances (Table ll)
The plants studied are;
1. Liriope platyphlla Wang et Tang,
2. L. spicata Lour,
3. Ophiopogon japonicus (L.F.) ker Gawler,
4. O. jaburan (Kunth) Lodd.
