Abstract

Synovial sarcoma is one of malignant mesenchymal tumor arising from the joints, brusae and tendon sheath. Predilection site is known as knee joint, however, it may occur in any portion of the body where synovial tissue exists. Trauma and inflammatory process were considered as a causative factor but not yet clarified.
A case of synovial sarcoma was experienced in the department of surgery, St. Paul´s Hospital Catholic Medical College. It was found in the inner aspect of the left foot of a 50 years old male. The patient noticed an adult thumb tip sized painless mass in the foot for 1 year, and excised at a private clinic and the wound healing was delayed and the mass grown up rapidly up to a child´s fist size with 1 year duration. Biopsy was done and confirmed in the Pathology department as a synovial sarcoma of the foot. Radical excision was proceeded and patient was discharged on the 9th day of the operation with successful wound healing. Approximately 10 month later of operation, pulmonary metastases was seen in the left lung field. Retrograde history revealed that incomplete excision of the mass at the private clinic yield local recurrence with aggravation of the mass. Attention should paved for the possibility of local recurrence and metastasis if the mass is considered as malignancy.
