Abstract

The matrix from which the blood cells are derived is the embryonic connective tissue, the mesenchyme. Blood formation throughout the mesoblastic period, the hepatic period and myeloid period, and after birth is confined under normal condition to the bone marrow. The method of entrane of matured blood cells into the circulation is not clear. Chemotactic factors probably play a role in calling forth leukocytes. Erythropoietic activity has been regarded as being regulated by the oxygen content of arterial blood. The nervous system, the endocrine glands, the spleen and plasma factors have been proposed by various investigators as playing this role in the regulation of hematopoiesis. Role of hormones in control of hemopoiesis has been discussed. The hormones of the adrenal cortex are all steroidal substances. Over 30 different steroids have been isolated and identified from animal adrenal glands or adrenal venous blood. Only a few of these have demonstrable metabolic effects. Clinical application of steroids on blood disorders has been discussed.
