Abstract
The author reviewed the brief history of the development of Western psychotherapy in Korea. And then he presented the definition and classification of psychotherapy and the essence of Western psychotherapy. He also compared the philosophy and the goal of Western psychotherapy with those of the Eastern traditional Tao. The author discussed the congruence of the therapeutic process in psychoanalytic therapy and the process of reaching enlightenment in Suhn(Zen) practice. He urged the Korean psychotherapist to practice the Eastern Tao and to learn Western Psychotherapeutic technique on the basis of the Eastern Tao.
