Abstract

In recent _years epidemiologic studies of hypertension have been conducted in various countries and prevalence and characteristics of hypertension in each countries have been gradually clarified in many aspects. Authors have reported epidemiologic studies of "hypertension in Koreans in several papers in the past and the incidence of hypertension in Koreans is relatively high but the degree of hypertensive severity was comparatively mild compared with those of other countries. However, in recent years in hospitals and private clinic we encountered more often relatively severe cases of hypertensive patients. The present study was conducted to evaluate the severity of hypertension in 1, 174 cases of Korean hypertensive patients seen during the past 6 years. The obtained results were as follows.
1) According to the Keith-Wagener´s classification in both survey and hospital hypertension groups the majority of the patients showed grade I and II retinopathy, and the incidence of grade III was relatively low and grade N was extremely rare. However, the incidence of grade III and IV showed the tendency of gradual increase. In group 2 hospital patients grade III was 7.2%, and grade N was 2.5%. However, in group 3 patients grade III increased to 8.4% and grade N 4.4%.
2) According to the criteria of W.H.O., Page, Sokolow, Duncan and Veterans Administration, the majority of the cases belonged to the mild to the moderate degrees and the severe cases were extremely rare. However, in recent years the percentage of severe cases of hypertension showed the tendency of increase with the advance of the years.
3) The data of severity of hypertension in Koreans were compared with those of other countries and briefly discussed.
