Abstract

Fifty cases of pulmonary tuberculous patients were subjected to phrenic nerve paralysis operation at the Surgical Department of the National T. B. Sanatorium, Masan, Korea, during the period of September 1951 to August 1952. Fluoroscopical examination was made on each case before and after the operation in order the diaphragmatic movement(amplitude and rate of elevation of the diaphragm) be determined. Vital capacity was also measured before and after the operation.
Following results are obtained:
1. After the operation, diaphragmatic movement on operated side is completely paralysed in 74 percent of all cases and diminished in 16 percent. It is presumed that some of the latter results may be attributed to the existence of remaining unparalysed accessory fibers.
2. After the operation, the amplitude of diaphragmatic movement on unoperated side becomes constantly larger than before the operation.
3. The rate of diaphragmatic elevation is as follows:
not elevated…… 26%, ½ rib interspace elevated……22%
1 rib interspace elevated .......32%, 1 ½ rib interspace elevated……6%
2 rib interspace elevated……4% undetermined……10%
