Abstract

Graham-Smith divided bacteria, according to their post-fission movement, into the following groups,1) slipping group; 2) snapping group; 3) folding group and 4) loop-forming group. Nutt and Seal explained the mechanism of post-fission movement as a pure mechanical or physical phenomenon, but Bus ilasaid that the post fission movement was also caused by an internal factor of bacteria themselves.
Various methods of bacterial cell division have been described. Knaysi classified the methods under three headings; 1) division by plate formation, centrifugal or centripetal; 2) division by cytoplasmic retraction and 3) division by constriction. Evidence supporting each method can be found in the literature. The descriptions, however, are sometimes too general, and incomplete often confusing the structures involved in the division. Different authors attribute different modes of division to the same organism.
The following results were obtained on Cl tetani, botulinum, sporogenes, histolytiucm, butyricum and sphenoides by making a one cell culture of them on film media and then making continuous observations of their mode of growth.
1. The cell division of anaerobes seemed to take place by centripetal plate formation.
2. By the post-fission movement, wt learn, to a certain extent, some special features of the resulting colony. According to Graham-Smith´s classification, some of the anaerobes belong to the loop-forming group and others to the snapping group.
3 It seemed that not only external factors but also internal factors of the organism play a part in the mode of growth.
