Abstract


Eight rabbits had been exposed to 18, 000 feet for 7 hours daily for nine weeks. Circulating plasma volume were determined by electrophotometry using congo red solution and other data including hematocrit, hemoglobin, plasma protein concentration , were obtained from copper sulfate gravity method. Blood water by Kuroda´s Micromethod, blood and plasma viscosity by Hess´s viscosimeter, serum protein fractions by Shim´s paper electrophoresis and blood pressure by direct measurement at carotic artery.
Experimental results can be summarized as follows.
1. For complete acclimatization to hypoxia and complete reduction from acclimatization takes about five reeks.
2. Hemoglobin concentration increased in average 2W. and hematocrit increased 23%.
3. Circulating blood volume increased ca. 78%, plasma volume 36% and cell volume 116%.
4. Circulating hemoglobin amount increased 110%.
5. Plasma protein conentration decreased a little, but the circulating total plasma protein amount increased ca. 33%, and albumin-globulin ratio also increased. Serum -1-globulin decreased.
6. Carotic arterial blood pressure was normal (94 mm Hg), and ECG findings were same as that of acute hypoxia except slower heart rate.
In short, the vital reaction in acclimatization to hypoxia is the increase of oxygen carrying capacity by increasing total hemoglobin. But in this case, if hematocrit, increases over 60%, the blood viscosity becomes very high, and accordingly circulatory disturbances would result. Therefore, the body lower the hematocrit by increasing blood volume to avoid such disturbances, and in reality, the total hemoglobin amount increases as much as twice. In order to prevent high hematocrit, plasma volume also iucreases and to compensate the high viscosity, the viscosity of plasma is lowered by decreasing plasma protein concenrtation and elevating albumin-globulin ratio. Moreover, the nutritional disturbances and the plasma colloid osmotic,, pressure function were completely compensated by increased total circulating plasma protein amount and high albumin-globulin ratio.
