Abstract


These hematological findings in rats with chronic carbontetrachloride intoxication are results of an observation lasting for sixty days during which time they received carbontetrachloride subcutaneously.
The , rats were divided into five-groups and one of them was used as a control group in which each rat. was given an injection of 04-5 cc of olive oil every day.
Carbontetrachloride was injected to the rest : of the four .experimental groups0.001 cc per day per 100 gms of body weight In the first group everyday, Q.002cc-per 100 gms of , bodyweight in the second group every other day 0.003 cc per 100 gins of body weight in the third ´ group
Levery ;third day,. and 0.004 cc-; per. 100 .gms of body weight in the fourth group e very fourth day, so that each individual at might receive the same total amout of carbontetrachloride during the period of the experiments.
Results of the experiments follow.
1. Body weight
The rats belonging to the group that received´ smaller amout of CC14 at a single dose gained their body weight normally but, in other groups , their growth
were interfered.
2. Erythrocytes
Erythrocytes in-rats that received smaller amount of CC14 at a time increased temporarily,showing two peaks during the . course of the observation, but´ inthose that received :larger ´ amount of CCl4, they decreased in number from the early stage of the observations, and this decrease lasted´ through to later stage of the observation.
3. Leucocytes
Leucocyte counts in the rats of smaller dosage group showed a temporary increase in number in the early stage of the
observation but they returned to a normal range in the later stage.
The group of rats that received larger amount of CC], showed quicker changes in leucocyte counts than the other groups, and the larger the injected amonnt of CC14 was, the greater the number of leucocytes increased.
4. Eosinophil cells
Eosinophil cells decreased on the eighth day of the experiment in all the experimental groups except in the fourth group.
In the later stage, eosinophil cells increased more markedly in larger dosage groups than in .the others.
5. Hemoglobin concentration
Hemoglobin concentrations increased until the´ twentieth day .-:and - gradually
decreased toward the end of4he observation in smaller dosage groups, but in the: other groups, the values decreased in the early stage, and slightly mcreased in the later stage. .
6. Hematocrit
Hematocrit values of the, first . groupincreased in the early, stage and decreased in the later stage -of the observation ,but In; the- second group, there were no_ fluctuations in:-hematocrit values in the early stage but there was decrease in the values:: in the later stage of the observation.
The hematocrit values in the third and fourth groups decreased slightly in the early stage, and increased in the later, stage of the observation. The changes of hematocrit values were similar to those of erythrocytes and hemoglobin concentrations in all the experimental groups.
7. Diameters of erythrocytes
The diameters of erythrocytes in the smaller dosage group slowly grew in the early stage and slightly diminished in the later stage of the experiment. In the larger dosage group, the diameters of erythrocytes gradually increased in proportion as the experiment progressed.
8. Color index
Color indices in the rats of the first group showed marked decrease in the later stage, and, on the other hand, they showed increase in the rest of the three groups in the same stage of th experiment.
9. Volume index
Although the changes of volume indices in all the experimental : groups were irregular, they, increased´ more in the larger dosage group.
10 Mean corpuscular´ hemoglobin
Although the changes of mean corpu-scular hemoglobin were irregular .in all thee experimental; groups, the changes were greater in-the later stage in the larger dosage groups.
11. Mean corpuscular ´volume
Mean corpuscular, volumes at the later stage of experiment decreased in the smaller dosage groups and " increased in the larger dosage groups.
