Abstract


Coal-miners working with various kinds of explosives in poorly ventilated gangways should be affected by high concentration of noxious gases in more or less degrees. This study was carried out, in this aspect, by measuring the amount of induced gases, and, at the same time, by clinical investigations on miners working in the gangways.
1. Explosives used in coal-mines induced various kinds of gases after explosions, and among them CO and NOz were noxious.
2. 10-12 kgs. of dynamite were blasted in working face 7x8 fta, and this working face was ventilated by fresh-air sending in through 3 inch air-pipe under 60 lbs. pressure. In this condifon, the concentration of the noxious gases in ´ the area decreased to the maximum allowable concentration 60 minutes after the explosion.
3. One third or one half of the miners who had been working more than 3 years in such working areas showed subjective symptoms which were supposed to be affected by the gases. Narrowing of visual fields was observed in one fourth of them.
