Abstract

Previous workers indicated that stimulation of the proximal end of the sciatic nerve caused pressor or depressor reflexes depending upon the stimulus intensities. Different parameters of i the stimulus might also be changed by varying degrees of anesthesia in the experimental animals. Under varying degrees of anesthesia, the author has investigated the effect of the stimulation of proximal end of the sciatic nerve upon blood pressure and respiration.
1. Under light anesthesia, stimulation with frequency lower than 10 cps caused depressor reflexes and augmented respiration, whereas frequencies higher than 20 cps caused pressor reflexes and accelerated respiration.
2. Under light anesthesia, stimulation with the intensity lower than 1.0 volt caused depressor reflexes and accelerated respiration, whereas stimulation with the intensity higher than 2.Ovolts caused pressor reflexes accompanied with augmented respiration.
3. Under light anesthesia, procaine application on the sciatic nerve abolished the blood pressure responses and respiratory reflex which were demonstrated by the stimulation of the proximal end of the sciatic nerve; the responses to the high frequency and intensity stimulation were abolished prior to the responses to the low frequency and intensity stimulation.
4. Pressor reflexes and respiratory responses elicited by the stimulation of proximal end of the sciatic nerve are ascribed to the pain fibers in the sciatic nerve.
5. Under deep anesthesia, stimulation of the proximal end of the sciatic nerve caused alw ays depressor reflexes and accelerated respiration regardless of stimulus intensity and freque
6. Under both light and deep anesthesia, changes 0.5^-5msec of pulse duration did affect the effects of thestimulation of the proximal end of the sciatic nerve on blood pres and respiration.
7. Under light anesthesia, stimulation of the proximal end of the sciatic nerve did affect heart rate.
