Abstract

The typing result of staphylococci with bacteriophages (phages) is sometimes variable, and the property of phages is influenced by strains to be propagated. Therefore, in order to know the effect of host bacteria and antibiotics on the propagation and typing results of phages, the author carried out some experiments with phages and propagating strains (PS) of Groups I and III, and penicillin, methicilline, streptomycin and terramycin with the following results.
1. When strains were tested on media containing antibiotics, the typing result becomes weaker than that typed on media without antibiotics. The typing with antibiotic-containing phage suspension showed the almost the same result with antibiotic containing media. However, the degree of difference varies according to the kind Of antibiotics, phages and strains.
2. When phages were propagated in the presence of antibiotics, the increased dose of antibiotics showed unfavourable effect on phages, and the activity of phages on bacteria was decreased. However, the successive propagation does not cause any more marked adverse effect.
3. The presence of trypaflavine and atabrine does not affect the result of typing.
4. When phages were propagated on strains different from their PS, the phages were strongly active on both strains propagated and their original PS.
5. The propagation of phages on PS after primary propagation on the other strain does not ,cause any change in their host range.
