Abstract


This is a report of exfoliative cytologic study of the effects of toothbrushing plus finger massage on the keratinization of the inflammed and normal gingiva.
Gingival massage is used to massage the gingiva, as well as to aid in cleansing the accessible surface of the teeth.
Keratinization is a process peculiar to squamous epithelium and its appendage and has been defined as the transformation of living cells into horny material.
The keratinization of gingiva is increased by proper gingival massage and varies inversely with the degree of inflammation.
In spite of intensive research into the histopathology and cytology, the effect of gingi-,7a1 massage on the keratinization of gingiva is still incompletely understood.
This report was studied by means of exfoliative cytology, using the Pharr modification of the Papanicolaou´s stain.
Subjects consisted of both 20 male students with normal gingiva and 40 male patients with inflammed gingiva.
They were ranged from 20 to 27 years of age.
The results and conclusions were as follows:
Results
1) The average percentage of each cell type in the normal gingiva:
Before the beginning of the finger massage;
yellow staining cells; 71.7% red staining cells; 22.3%
red & green staining cells; 6.0% green staining cells; 1.5%
After. 10 days of combining finger massage with toothbrushing; yellow staining cells; 69.5% red u u 23.8%
red & green staining cells; 6.3% green staining cells; 1.5/06
After 20 days of combining finger massage, with toothbrushing; yellow staining cells; 72.6% red staining cells; 20. 51016
red & green staining cells; 5.0% green staining cells; 1.66/0
2) The average percentage of each cell type in the inflammed gingiva: Before the treatment;
yellow staining cells; 55.86/0 red staining cells; 32.1%
red & green staining cells; 8.160 green staining cells; 3.9%
In group using only toothbrushing after treatment:
a) After 10 days:
yellow staining cells; 57.5% red staining cells: 29.5%
red & green staining cells; 8.6% green staining cells; 3.4%
b) After 20 days;
yellow staining cells: 68.2% red staining cells; 23.9%
red & green staining cells; 6.4% green staining cells; 2.3%
In group using toothbrushing plus finger massage after treatment:
a) After 10 days;
yellow staining cells; 63.4% red staining cells; 25.5/0%
red & green staining cells; 8.33o green staining cells; 2.6%
b) After 20 days; yellow staining cells; 72.93% red staining cells; 21.1%
red & green staining cells; 4.4% green staining cells; 1.6%
Conclusions
The inflammed gingiva revealed more decreased keratinization than that of normal gingiva.
There was little effect on the keratinization of normal gingiva with toothbrushing combined with finger massage.
In inflammed gingiva, it was noted that toothbrushing combined with finger massage brought about more increased keratinization than that of toothbrushing alone.
