Abstract


This experiment was designed to clarify the effect of vitamin E on the salivary glands of mouse under the starvation stress. Vitamin E was injected on a daily dose of 5 mg; 10 days for the adequate dose group and 20 days for the overdose group. After completion of injection, animals were put into the starvationabsolute and free access of water groups. Histochemical observations of the major salivary glands, parotid (serous), submandibular (mixed) and sublingual (mucous) glands were calculated at the periods of starvation; 24, 48 hours and at the time of death.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1 Salivary glands showed atrophy and regressive changes due to starvation, mainly in the secretory portion; prominent change in the serous gland, while the mucous gland appeared slightly affected. Besides, almost no change was shown in the excretory duct system.
2. Administration of adequate dose of vitamin E resulted an increse of secretory granule synthesis and expulsion in the serous gland change due to starvation was in less grade. However, overdose vitamin E group showed opposite results.
3. The function of secretory portion in the submandibular and sublingual glands were accelerated with adequate dose injection of vitamin E, and that there was no functional disturbances in case of serous gland when overdose of vitamin E was administered.
4. Special feature of submandibular glandgranular convoluted tubule showed an increase of secretory granule synthesis by the vitamin E but it distresses in to fuse of granule. Expulsion of secrets was much accelerated by adequate dose, while slightly decreased by overdose injection.
5. It seems that administration of vitamin E accelerated the function of striated duct, however, it was more sensitively changed by fuctional status of secretory portion.
6. Granular cell of intercalated duct shows the increasing tendency to vitamin E administration, It was slightly increased by adequate dose and more increased by overdose administration.
7. Stress due to injection itself (once a day, 0.05cc, #26 needle) caused almost no effects to
functions of salivary gland.
