The Infusion Rate of Mivacurium and Atracurium for Cesarean Section

Abstract


Mivacurium is metabolized by pseudocholinesterase (pChe), whereas atracurium is removed by Hofmann elimination. The purpose of this study was to compare the difference in the infusion rate of atracurium and mivacurium, and their spontaneous recovery between full-term pregnant women (P group) and non-pregnant women (Non-P group). Muscle relaxation was maintained by continuous infusion of mivacurium or atracurium to keep the lst response of TOF at 5+/-1%. After discontinuing the infusion, the recovery index was measured (Table 1). An accelerograph ws used to evaluate muscle relaxation. The infusion rate of mivacurium was significantly lower in the P group (P<0.05), whereas the infusion rate of atracurium was not significantly different between the two groups. There was no significant difference in the recovery indices of both relaxants between the two groups. The mivacurium infusion rate of full-term pregnant women to maintain muscle relaxation was significantly lower than for non-pregnant women. We think that it may be due to a decrease of pChe during pregnancy.
