Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to identify factors related to regular exercise participation of middle-aged and older people.
Methods: We used the sixth data (2016) of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). The participants of the regular exercise were 1,973 among the total subjects (n=7,490). We divided the participants into two groups; middle-aged (Age<65) and elderly people (65≤Age). For the statistical analyses, the multivariable logistic regression was performed by using the stepwise method.

Results: In the middle-aged group (n=843), the top five influential factors were working status (unemployed) [odds ratio, (OR)=1.97, 95% confidence interval, (95% CI) =1.96-1.98], education level (college or above) (OR=1.86, 95% CI=1.85-1.87), size of city (middle or small city) (OR=1.59, 95% CI=1.58-1.60), breakfast pattern (eating) (OR= 1.43, 95% CI=1.42-1.44), and smoking status (non-smokers) (OR=1.32, 95% CI=1.31-1.33). However, the older group (n=1,130) had education level (college or above) (OR=3.27, 95% CI=3.27- 3.29), working status (unemployed) (OR= 2.09, 95% CI=2.08-2.10), size of city (middle or small city) (OR=1.97, 95% CI= 1.96-1.98), smoking status (non-smoker) (OR=1.71, 95% CI=1.70-1.72), and sex (male) (OR=1.66, 95% CI=1.65-1.67) as the top five related factors.

Conclusion: We identified various contributing factors participating in regular exercise for middle-aged and older people. Therefore, public health providers should consider the related factors for active life.
