Abstract


Background: We investigated the efficacy of premixed normal saline, lidocaine and sodium bicarbonate in reducing pain and withdrawal movement caused by intravenous injection of rocuronium.

Methods: Seventy four adult patients were randomly allocated into three groups in a double-blinded, prospective study. Rocuronium 50 mg/5 ml was mixed with Same volume of normal saline (Group S, n=29), 2% lidocaine (Group L, n=21), 8.4% sodium bicarbonate (Group B, n=24). After administration of premixed rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg in awake patients, we evaluated intensity of injection pain and withdrawal movement.

Results: We observed that the incidences of pain as well as withdrawal movement was significantly reduced in Group B (20.8%, 0%) compared to Group S (79.3%, 27.6%).

Conclusion: We conclude that sodium bicarbonate addition is effective in relieving the pain and withdrawal movement of rocuronium.
