Abstract


Purpose: To study prospectively the results of Tension-free Vaginal tape (TVT) operation for the women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) to be used as an minimally invasive operation.

Materials and Methods: Of 57 consecutive women with SUI who underwent the TVT operation between Mar 2002 and May 2004, 42 patients follow up more than 6 months were included in this study. The procedure was carried out in accordance with the established method under general or spinal anesthesia.

Results: Mean age was 47.5 years (31-68). Mean follow up was 16.9 months (5-31). Mean hospital stay was 5.8 days (3-13) and mean operation time was 33.7 minutes (15-70). Mean duration of post operative indwelling catheter was 2.3 days (1-8). Subjectively, 36 (85.7%) of the patients were cured and 6 (14.2%) significantly improved. Complication were immediate postoperative urinary retention in 7 patients (16.6%), bladder perforation in 4 patients (9.5%). Mean volume of post voiding residual urine was pre operation: 50.3 ml (0-107) and post operation: 61.5 ml (0-417) (p = 0.386).

Conclusions: TVT operation is safe, simple and effective procedure for the treatment of female SUI.
