Abstract


Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is the metabolic disorder by thiamine deficiency. At present, MRI is considered the most valuable imaging technique in diagnosing WE. Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) helps to diagnose acute ischemic stroke. but high signal intensity in DWI is shown in other nonischemic disorders. We repot a case of a 60-year-old women who developd a Wernicke’s encephalopathy 44days after parenteral nutirition with signal intensity changes located in bilateral medial thalami, peiaquaductal brain stem and mammillary bodies. DWI change may provide evidence of cytotoxic edema associated with thiamine deficiency and is helpful to diagnose Wernicke encephalopahty.
