Abstract

Purpose: The teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) had a positive public health impact beyond resuscitating cardiac arrest victims. To study the awareness and current status of CPR education in Chungcheong district,
the public survey was designed to assess general knowledge and concern regarding CPR training in a South Korea community.

Materials and Methods : Using a telephone survey of a randomly selected samples from Seoul metropolitan (n = 424) and Chungcheong district (n = 98), we questioned 522 subjects using structured questionnaire in October 2007. Those
questions sought basic aspects of knowledge and awareness towards CPR as well as demographic information.

Results: Fifty percent of subjects had previously been taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in Chungcheong district. Of these, 16% had been taught during the previous year, and 55% over 5 years previously. Seventy-eight percent of those thought that resuscitation had been a compulsory component of the Korean military or school educational programs. Fifty-seven percent of those surveyed desired to know more about resuscitation. CPR knowledge was poor, however, with only 20% knowing an acceptable rate at which to perform chest compressions, and only 13.5% knowing the correct compression-to-ventilations ratio for adult CPR. There was no difference between Seoul and Chungcheong district. But, the public health service and educational institute were higher proportion of willingness of training site for CPR than Seoul.

Conclusion: Although awareness of the community toward CPR are high, theoretical knowledge relating to basic CPR is poor. This suggests that present community CPR educational strategies have limited efficacy. Additional new strategy for public education program should be prepared in Chungcheong district.
