Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to identify sleep related factors and psychological distress and explore factors affecting sleep quality in tertiary hospital nurses.

Methods: A cross-sectional study of 159 nurses from tertiary university hospitals was conducted using self-administered questionnaires for data collection. Descriptive analyses and hierarchical multiple regressions were conducted.

Results: The average Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score was 7.79±3.42, including 80.5% with poor sleep quality (PSQI ≥ 5). The prevalences of depression, anxiety, and stress were 29.6%, 12.6%, and 26.4%, respectively. Factors associated with sleep quality were stress (β=.38, p<.001) and sleep duration on workdays (β=-.22, p=.004) and free days (β=-.14, p=.039) in the final model, explaining 31.0% of the total variance (F=26.75, p<.001).

Conclusions: The sleep quality among tertiary hospital nurses was affected by stress level and sleep duration. For better sleep quality strategies for adequate sleep duration and reducing stress levels are needed at individual and organizational levels.
