Abstract

Recently, the number of elderly patients complaining of masticatory muscle pain has been increasing. There is no doubt that jaw motor function and muscle pain are closely interrelated, as most temporomandibular disorder patients complain of pain and tenderness in craniofacial muscles and dysfunction of jaw movements. However, pathophysiological mechanism of masticatory muscle pain has not been fully understood, as it is difficult to identifying neurobiological mechanism of muscle pain in clinical studies due to; 1) multidimensional perception of pain, 2) great variability of clinical muscle pain between patients, 3) lack of the cause-and-effect relationship, 4) difficulties in recording and directly activating the muscle nociceptors. Human experimental muscle pain models may provide important understanding of sensorimotor interactions in craniofacial muscle pain. This review will discuss recent knowledge of the neurobiology and electrophysiology of masticatory muscle pain obtained from clinical studies and human experimental muscle pain models.
